Bridging the gap
If you have a gap in your smile, replacing teeth is important not only for aesthetics, but for your oral health. At Fuquay Family Dentistry, we use natural tooth colored porcelain and advanced technology to artfully craft restorations with the utmost precision. A porcelain bridge can restore your smile in form and function, so you can get back to your life with a smile as full as your heart.
What is a bridge?
A dental bridge, also called a dental partial or partial denture, is a fabricated restoration to replace a single or multiple missing teeth. The restoration or fabricated tooth or teeth is bonded and secured in place using the teeth (abutment teeth) on either side of the gap. Bridges can be either fixed or removable.
Fixed bridges cannot be removed, and are secured to surrounding teeth using dental crowns. Removable bridges are secured with small metal clasps or precision attachments. Fixed bridges offer more security and stability then their removable counterparts, but the option that is best for your needs will be determined in a consultation with Dr. McCormick or Dr. Meunier.
Why replace missing teeth?
Some of our patients who are not as concerned with the cosmetic benefit of replacing teeth – maybe they are missing a tooth or teeth in the back which is not very visible – ask us why replacing teeth is necessary. The answer is not simply cosmetic. Your oral health is a complex system, and when one component breaks down, the entire system is likely to fail.
- Health – Allowing missing teeth to remain that way is dangerous to your oral health. Teeth on either side of the gap are not supported, and they will begin to shift or rotate, and become lose. The jawbone beneath the missing tooth actually begins to deteriorate without the support of the tooth root, which is what causes the “sunken face” appearance. Your bite will become compromised, which leads to further dental complications and jaw joint problems.
- Function – If you are suffering from a missing tooth or teeth, you understand the frustration that comes along with it. It makes it nearly impossible to enjoy your favorite foods as you did before, and can make regular speech more difficult. Replacing missing teeth with a dental bridge will allow you get back to living your life.
- Aesthetics – In this day and age, living with a gap toothed smile is not a good look, unless you’re a baby. Not only does it drag down your confidence and self-esteem, but may prevent you from seeking and receiving opportunities. A complete, natural looking smile is a sign of happiness, vitality, and success. Replacing teeth with a dental bridge will ensure you’re putting your best face forward.
