No more metal
No, we’re not telling you what kind of music to listen to. If you want to rock out to Metallica, be our guest, rock on. But we will tell you one place that metal doesn’t belong, and that’s in your mouth. Yes, metal has been used effectively in dentistry for the last 150 years, but with recent advances in techniques and technology, we are now able to more safely, and more effectively restore teeth using a tooth colored resin that blends in seamlessly with your natural teeth!
What causes tooth decay?
Tooth decay is the number one most common chronic disease in America. Why? Sugar. With the obscene amounts of sugar packed into our favorite foods and beverages, it’s no wonder tooth decay is at an all-time high. While reducing or eliminating sugar from your diet is recommended, we realize this is not entirely realistic. Yes, even your Holly Springs dentist enjoys a sweet treat from time to time. So how can we defend ourselves against tooth decay? Oral hygiene.
Sugar alone will not cause tooth decay. It’s only the sugar that is allowed to remain on your teeth that will turn into the acid that breaks down tooth enamel and causes decay. Your best defense is a solid oral home care routine and regular visits with Dr. McCormick or Dr. Meuiner. Brushing after each meal, and flossing at least once daily will ensure your teeth stay decay-free. When brushing and flossing is not always an option, we recommend at least rinsing with water after eating or enjoying a sugary beverage.
Found a cavity?
Don’t panic. Cavities or dental caries are quite common, and can be easily treated and filled with a tooth colored filling. A tooth colored filling will restore your tooth to its beautiful form and function and stop the decay in its tracks. The most obvious benefit of tooth colored fillings compared to metal fillings is that they are…can you guess? Tooth colored! You can have a tooth filled discreetly, without the embarrassment of the glaring metal reminder every time you open your mouth. Tooth colored fillings are natural looking and blend in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
Aside from aesthetics, there are numerous functional and health benefits of using tooth colored resin instead of metal to fill cavities. Tooth colored resin is more stable and more durable than metal fillings. Where metal fillings are more susceptible to wear and tear, and actually expand and contract with changes in temperature, our new tooth colored fillings are resilient and long-lasting.
